Regional Secretary of West Papua Province, Nataniel Mandacan, said the Province of West Papua could develop a lot of economic potentials. The plan to establish community-based economic potential is one of the essential points in the local regulation draft on Sustainable Provinces.
Mandacan explained that so far, the industry is flourishing in West Papua. Recently, the provincial government is working with investors to expand the cement industry. In addition to the stated industry, he said, in Bintuni Bay there was already BP Tangguh which processed gas reserves.
However, according to Mandacan, this is not enough because the advancement of the industry turned out to have little impact on society.
“But they are big [companies]. We [need to] immediately encourage people to progress in agriculture and plantations. Many of our people are farmers,” Mandacan said at West Papua Governatorial Office.
Potato, cabbage, and coffee are three commodities that can be developed in West Papua. The refined products later are expected to lift the economy of the community.
“They garden using natural fertilizer. The harvest is also quite good, but it is still within the family’s scope. We need to re-arrange this [gardening system] so that it can become a sustainable economy,” said Mandacan.
Mandacan underlined that the West Papua Human Development Index is currently ranked 31st. By strengthening the people’s economy, the human development index can go up.
“We hope it [the index] can grow about five to seven percent from the creative economy development. It does not sacrifice trees. The forests remain green, but there is economic growth. This indeed requires time and community wisdom,” Mandacan closed.
