The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs just finished running a survey to measure the religious tolerance all across the country. The survey is conducted annually. The province of Papua scored 80,2 out of 100. The national average is 72, and the lowest is 60.
For the past three years, Papua has topped the survey, outrunning 33 other provinces. In Tambrauw district, West Papua, christian communities are regularly involved in Idul Fitri celebrations. In return, the muslims are also contributive during Christmas.
In Jayapura, muslim communities help keeping churches safe during service. In Fakfak, people are living the philosophy of satu tungku, tiga batu, meaning that an ideal family should consist of multiple religions, to respect their ancestors who converted their beliefs in the past.
Many christians in Papua and East Nusa Tenggara have gone to schools owned by Muhammadiyah, a major muslim organization in Indonesia. However, irresponsible parties have always tried to spark frictions between religious communities.
